Victoria ISD students continue earning Industry-Based Certifications

VICTORIA, Texas – Victoria ISD’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) department began Industry-Based Certification (IBC) testing for the 2021-22 school year in October. The training took place at the Career and Technology Institute (CTI), Victoria East and Victoria West High School. Recently, final testing for the fall semester was completed, with 158 students earning IBC’s.

Fall IBC testing included:

Fifty-nine students participated in testing for certification in Entrepreneurship and Small Business and passed. Entrepreneurship and Small Business is a certification from Certiport. It is sponsored by Intuit and the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship and ensures tomorrow’s leaders are prepared with the toolkit they need to get ahead in today’s competitive landscape.

ESB validates a students’ understanding of core business principles, regardless of the field they want to enter. The principles include the essentials needed to launch and maintain a successful business.

Entrepreneurship Small Business certification opportunities are offered in the following courses:

Fifty-six students participated in testing for certification in Microsoft Office Specialist – Word and passed. Successful candidates for the Word 2016 exam have a fundamental understanding of the Word environment They also have the ability to complete tasks independently. Candidates who take this exam will demonstrate the correct application of the principal features of Word 2016 by:

Students in the following courses had the opportunity to take the Microsoft Office Specialist Certification for Word during the school year:

Ten students participated in testing for certification in National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) Core Level 1 and passed. NCCER Core is created as a rigorous, competency-based, industry-recognized program for career and technical education. Students may complete the required elements sooner or later than the recommended 150 hours of knowledge and skills-based instruction. This depends on their individual proficiency in mastering the content. NCCER Core is a prerequisite to all other Level 1 craft curricula. Its modules focus on topics such as Basic Safety, Communication Skills and Introduction to Construction Drawings.

Twenty-six students participated in testing for certification in Non-Commissions Security Officer Level II and passed. A student who completes the non-commissioned security officer level II certification could work in a variety of occupations. These include security guards and personal security agents. Some of the work involved with this certification and its usual occupations includes:

The Level II Training Course and Exam is required of all non-commissioned security officers, commissioned security officers and personal protection officers.

Students in the following courses had the opportunity to take the Non-Commissions Security Guard Level II during the school year:

Six students participated in testing for certification in OSHA 30 Hour Construction and passed. The OSHA Outreach Training Program provides workers with basic and more advanced training about common safety and health hazards on the job. Students receive an OSHA 30-hour course completion card at the end of the training. They can also complete the 30-hour course online or through an OSHA authorized outreach trainer.

In January 2022, IBC testing will resume for the spring semester. Students will have the opportunity to receive a variety of certifications depending on what career path they are interested in.

VISD’s CTE programs work with business, industry, and higher education to combine academics, workplace knowledge, and the skills that are needed to prepare the future workforce to succeed in an ever-changing global economy. These programs offer students the chance to earn industry-recognized certifications. It also allows for a seamless transition into the workforce upon graduation. These certifications and training can help students to obtain a job that could pay for college or start a career straight out of high school. Many of the CTE courses offered are articulated with post-secondary institutions. Students are then eligible to earn college credit at the same time as earning high school credit at no additional cost to students.
